Information on Domestic Violence and Sexual Violence
Domestic Violence is a pattern of coercive and abusive behavior used by one person to gain and maintain power over another with whom they have a familiar, intimate, or other ongoing relationship where there is an expectation of trust; forms include (but are not limited to) physical, sexual, psychological, and economic abuse and violence. 
Every nine seconds in the United States a woman is assaulted or beaten.
Sexual Violence is an act of violence where sex is used as a weapon in unwanted sexual activity; forms of sexual violence include: rape, date/acquaintance rape, stalking, human trafficking, pornography, exploitation, incest, child sexual assault, ritual abuse, marital or partner rape, sexual harassment, and exposure or voyeurism.
Native women are three times more likely to be a victim of sexual assault than women of other races. (Bureau of Justice Statistics.  American Indians and Crime.  U.S. Dept. of Justice, 1999.)

Bad River Domestic Abuse Program Shelter
Our Domestic Abuse Program Shelter is now open, and available to serve up to four families at a time.  Please call us at (715) 682-8379 for safety, safety planning, advocacy, legal advocacy, support groups, cultural healing, ceremonies, and children’s advocacy.  If you need immediate assistance after business hours, please call Ashland County Dispatch at (715) 682-7023 and inform them that you need to get in touch with the Bad River Shelter.  They will take down your number and call us.  We will then meet you at the shelter.  You do not have to report to law enforcement if you do not want to. 

Who We Serve and Service Area

●          The Domestic Abuse program serves victims/survivors and their dependants who reside within the boundaries of the Bad River Reservation; yet will provide services or referrals for victims/survivors who do not reside on the reservation yet are seeking supportive services.

●          There are no eligibility requirements

●          There are no fees or costs to receive services

●          The referral sources used by the Domestic Abuse Program include but are not limited to those programs and projects within the Bad River Tribe; additional programs/projects/agencies within the State of Wisconsin, Ashland County, the City of Ashland and other Tribe’s throughout Wisconsin and Tribe’s/Nations across the country.
